don't be ignorant |
Here's an...er... interesting photo from a rally in favour of Proposition 8 in California, which eliminates gay couples' right to marry:
"Homosexuality is not a race", this woman claims. (?!)
I agree. We should slow down and take our time to enjoy it, just like with all sexuality. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.
There's nothin' wrong With me lovin' you Baby, no, no You know what I'm talkin' 'bout Come on, baby, hey, hey Let your love come out If you believe in love

Well, it's not a race...but I do like to finish ;)
That is the most bizarre sign I have ever seen. I love your spin on it.

Kimberly, I just don't understand what that sign is supposed to mean. At all. Maybe because I'm anti-Prop 8 and pro-gay marriage myself.
But I like your idea that even if it's not a race we should all finish! ;)

I get tired of people expecting certain privledges because of what they do in bed.
I mean, where's my tax break or health care benefits because I like erotic spanking ?
-
Annie, I think you *should* get a tax break and health benefits for liking erotic spanking! Hell, maybe there should be an incentive program to encourage more of it!
I'm making a joke but not really. I don't think anyone should get special treatment for what they do in the bedroom (although your comment made me think about what that world would be like!).
On the other hand, I think consenting adults who love each other should be able to marry each other and have the right to sit by each other's bedside in a hospital and all the other legal rights that we automatically accord to a married heterosexual partnership, no matter how dysfunctional.
I can't see any good reason for refusing this.
I admit I have a biased perspective, because when I was recently hospitalised my nearest family member (who I hadn't spoken to in 4 years) was automatically accorded control over all decisions, and the person closest to me (who is male but with whom I don't have any sort of conventional relationship other than 'friend') was shut out from all decisions. Even though he's my closest friend and has been for about 14 years now--even though we speak every day--I couldn't even easily get permission for him to visit me, and he couldn't act for me legally.
I've recently written a will as a result of that experience and made him my legal guardian should I be incapacitated--but it was extraordinary to me how difficult it was to get access to my best friend or give him access to even simple things like paying my utility bill because we don't have a relationship that is legally recognised. He's the only family I have, but legally speaking he was nothing.
Anyway the whole experience gave me a little idea of what it must be like for a true partner who is suddenly shut out because the Law decides that their idea of family is the only one that matters.
Love O

The only thing I can even start to make of it is that she's saying people should have equal rights solely based on race. Tough luck to all the non-male, non-Christian, non-straights out there, but by Gawd, no one better call her a racist!
I'm pretty sure she's related to the enormous number of English-only protesters you can find around here at a given moment. I'm simultaneously profoundly depressed and unable to stop laughing when I see a sign like: ENGLISH ONLY! RESPECT ARE LANGUAGDE!
And if it's a race, did I only run half of it? :)

People asked if I was happy about the 2008 election. Sure, there's finally some modicum of hope in the White House, but photos like this (and my neighbor's front yard sign supporting proposition 8) show me that the rot of hatred and ignorance is still very much alive.

O, thank you for the response - makes perfect sense, especially in that context, and I agree with you wholeheartedly. I'm glad you had a Will made and sorry it had to be done for that reason ! And Lookout Mama - I was merely being a smart ass. Chill !

I was referring to the woman with the sign, not to you in any way. Thanks in advance for further assumptions about my reading comprehension.
